In “Beds,” written by Emily Rupp, the three performers Rupp, Camille Theobald and Katherine Scott discuss bringing their rapists to justice. The short scene is heartbreaking, especially when one of the performers begins to cry, but serves as a good lesson to other young women to stand up for themselves if they are ever in a similar situation."
"There are some more lighthearted moments in the show, as well. Thoebald's song “Diets” performed by the entire cast had audience members laughing as they sang about the pitfalls of many popular diet methods. Later in the show, the “Virgin Support Group” scene written by Gonzalez and performed by Gonzalez, Fishback, Rupp, Theobald, Arianna Hanson and Andira Rodriguez gave audiences a humorous look at the lengths young woman who are still virgins must sometimes go to in order to stay that way." http://www.pacepress.org/arts/two-university-students-featured-in-fringe-show-1.1602707 nytheatre.com review Carissa Cordes · August 15, 2010 "Girlpower: Survival of the Fittest is one of the most unique FringeNYC 2010 offerings I've found so far. It is brought to the festival by the Project Girl Performance Collective and Co-Op Theatre East. ......"deeply personal material based on real interviews and experiences" about "issues they face growing up in today's world." The performers devised and created all the pieces presented in Girlpower. However this is not a show about self-pity, indulgence, or attention-seeking. This is an honest with no apologies show that takes issues girls struggle with every day, from body image and bullies to rape and absent fathers. The girls use these subjects and transform them into a theatrical experience using song, dance, poetry and rhyme, storytelling, and some humor. The girls bond onstage, have fun, and present themselves as a confident and supporting ensemble. "For myself I found a few of the pieces especially striking. I laughed in camaraderie at "Diet Song" by Camille Theobald. Emily Rupp's "Beds" is disturbing and heartbreaking, but I felt so proud the girls in the stories (played by Emily Rupp, Camille Theobald, and Katherine Scott) follow through to justice against their rapists." "It was a pleasure to see young women using theater as an outlet to express the daily challenges that women around the world encounter. The work Project Girl Performance Collective is initiating is multi-layered in its social practice and is sure to provide inspiration to many more young women." Tess, Marketing Manager for the Culture Project
"I left the theatre feeling inspired and uplifted. Every girl will leave with a sense of empowerment and everyone else will leave with a renewed amount of feminine respect." -Audrey Alunan (Fringetastic plog Reviews) |
